WHO defines maternal deaths as deaths of women that occur during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days after the end of pregnancy, from all causes related to or aggravated by pregnancy or its management, but not caused by accidents/injuries.

The Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) indicator from the SP2020 Long Form results is obtained using the Maternal Mortality Ratio, where the incidence of maternal deaths is approximated by the incidence of PRD (Pregnancy-Related Death).

The Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is the number of maternal deaths within a certain period per 100,000 live births within the same period.
